GENERAL INFORMATION
The 19th annual conference of the South Carolina Marine Educators Association, "Spineless Wonders," will be held October 12-14, 2007 at the historic Penn Center on St. Helena Island. Join marine educators and scientists from throughout the state as we focus on the marvelous marine invertebrates of SC. Highlights include a keynote address, "Exploring the Ecology and Behavior of Coastal Zooplankton: A View Through the Looking Glass" by Dr. Dennis Allen, research director of The Belle W. Baruch Institute, an annual auction, inspiring and educational concurrent sessions featuring our own scientists, researchers, educators and special invitees, as well as a plenary session focusing on climate change in SC's waters. A Marine Meringue, dance and extraordinary field trips complete the weekend!

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
PRE-REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Registration includes all conference activities, accommodations and meals listed in the Schedule Overview. Registration fees for the entire weekend are as follows,
PER PERSON:

Members: $220
Non-members: $240
All registrations postmarked after September 5, 2007, the fee for is $250.00.
Registration Due by September 28, 2007 to determine room assignments.
For those who do not wish to participate overnight, the non-stayover rate is $125 for the Conference. This covers all conference costs except lodging. Advance registration for the day rate will insure you get all meals served that day (dinner on Friday, three meals on Saturday, two on Sunday).
There are no planned family activities and due to the nature of the facilities and its limited occupancy, we request that this be a professional and adult conference. Also, only conference registrants will be allowed to attend conference functions. Guests of conference participants will have to register for the conference at the above rates to receive accommodations and/or meals. LODGING & LOCATION
The Penn Center has a limited number of Lodge Rooms that include twin beds and a shared bath, and have varying number of occupancy per room. Because of these limitations, rooms will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Please list the names of anyone you would prefer as your roommates. Roommates should submit registration forms at the same time before the room reservation can be confirmed. A multiple-occupancy Lodge Room will not be reserved until registration has been received for all occupants.
Late registrants (after September 5th) should assume there are no on-site rooms left.
IF YOU PAY AND REGISTER FOR A LODGE ROOM AND NONE ARE AVAILABLE, YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED IMMEDIATELY VIA EMAIL AND BE GIVEN THE AVAILABLE OPTIONS. Refunds will be made at the registration desk at the Conference, or by mail if requested. PRELIMINARY CONFERENCE AGENDA

CONFERENCE FIELD TRIPS
Please register in advance of the conference on the attached form so that we can plan adequately.
You may list an alternative in case your preferred trip is filled by the time you register.

Friday, October 12
11:00-2:00pm "Class Saltwater Aquarium for Beginners" - $5 fee
2:00-3:30pm Nature Tour of Penn Center - $5 fee
  Join Naturalist Bruce Lampright for a nature exploration of Penn Center's woods and marshlands. Bring your binoculars as we search for the elusive Red-headed Woodpecker and the secretive Marsh Hen.
2:00-4:00pm York W. Bailey Museum - $3.00 fee
  Take a self-guided tour to learn the fascinating story of Penn School, the first vocational school for blacks in the nation, and its place in history. Also be sure to visit the Gift Shop for homemade quilts, sweetgrass baskets, and other Sea Island & Gullah books and memorabilia.
   
Saturday Oct. 13th
2:00 - 5:00pm Coastal Kayaking - $35.00 fee
  Put your swimsuit on and kayak the "dolphin hole" with Eric & Will from the Kayak Farm. Paddlers will launch from Russ Point Landing near Fripp Inlet and explore local marine flora and fauna up close and personal.
2:00 - 4:30pm Beach & Lagoon Ecology - $15.00 plus $4.00/person park entry fee
  Travel to Hunting Island State Park, one of our states most scenic, for an afternoon of fun in the water. Prepare to get wet with Bruce Lampright as participants pull seine and dip nets while searching for diverse marine "critters" on the beach and in salt water lagoons.

HOW DO I GET THERE?
The Penn Center is located on St. Helena Island in Beaufort County, just off of Highway 21.

From Columbia: Take 1-26 East towards Charleston. Take Exit 169 onto I-95 South towards Savannah. Take Exit 33 to Highway 17 North (towards Beaufort). Follow 17 North to Gardens Corner where you will bear right onto Highway 21 South. Follow Hwy 21 through downtown Beaufort, over the Wood's Memorial Bridge. See directions from Charleston to Penn Center for directions from downtown Beaufort.

From Charleston: Take Highway 17 South to Gardens Corner (just past Yamessee). Turn Left onto Hwy 21 South towards Beaufort. Follow Hwy 21 through downtown Beaufort, over the Wood's Memorial Bridge. From the Wood's Memorial Bridge it is approximately 7 miles on Hwy 21 to Martin Luther Blvd. where you will be turning Right to the Penn Center (you will cross Lady's Island and be on St. Helena Island before you turn Right onto Martin Luther Blvd). The Penn Center is less than a half mile on your right.

From I-95 South: Take Exit 8 (South Carolina) off of I-95 on to Highway 278 towards Hilton Head Island. Take Hwy 170 off of Hwy 278 towards Beaufort. Take Hwy 170 into Beaufort. At Hwy 21 in Beaufort take a Right onto Hwy 21 to the Wood's Memorial Bridge. See directions from Charleston to Penn Center for directions from downtown Beaufort.
